Descendants of James Ward-Lee

  1. James Lee born about 1840, St Thomas, Exeter, Devon, married 11 September 1868, Parish Church of St George, Bloomsbury London, as James Lee (widower), Eliza Hannah Smith, born about 1841, Poplar, London, (daughter of Leonard Smith and Charlotte Beechey). James died 12 April 1889, Bournemouth, Hampshire. Eliza died 19 February 1919 in Bournemouth. He was a barber of 6, Alma Place, Bournemouth in the 1871 census. His name was recorded as James Ward Lee (no hyphen) born St Thomas, Exeter. He apparently changed his name to "Ward-Lee" around this time. He was James Ward-Lee (hairdresser) in 1872 when Alice married, living at Mannington Place, Bournemouth. In the 1875 P.O. Directory and in the 1878 Whites directory he is listed as a Coffee & Eating House Proprietor of Commercial Road, Bournemouth. In the 1881 census, he is the Lodging House Keeper of Devonshire House (Licensed Lodging House), Terrace Road, Holdenhurst, Bournemouth. His name was recorded as James Ward-Lee (with a hyphen). Jame's place of birth is given as Exwick, which is the ecclesiastical parish of St Thomas Exeter, 1.5 miles northwest of Exeter, Devon. His age is 41. Eliza's age is 32. Children present were Harry, aged 3 months, Walter, aged 3, Beatrice, aged 4, Alice, aged 8, Annie, aged 10, Albert, aged 11, James F.L, aged 12. He was shown as James Lee (deceased) Lodging House Keeper in 1902 when Alice married Arthur. Alice was also shown as Lee. It is noted that when James Ward-Lee registered some of the births, as he did in the case of Ernest Frank and Harry David, he referred to Eliza Hannah as "Eliza Charlotte Ward-Lee"! Though he was not consistent as two, William David and Walter Herbert, just refer to her as Eliza Ward-Lee. In 1886 he was a lodging house keeper in Westbourne. When he died in 1889 his address was 3 St Michaels Road, Bournemouth. He was buried in Wimborne Rd Cemetery, Bournemouth, Plot M3 87 South, but there is no headstone.

  3. James Frederick Leonard Lee (1.James1) born 1869, Bath, Somerset, baptized: May 21 1872, St Peter's, Bournemouth. His birth was registered as James Frederick L Lee - Bath 5C 698. He was married as Frederick James L Lee in 1893 at Christchurch to Mary Louisa T Short, daughter of Frederick T & Martha Short, born 1861 at Iwerne, Dorset. In the 1901 census he was recorded as James F Lee, Housepainter, living at 226 Stewart Road, Bournemouth, with Mary, aged 33, born Dorset & their son, Frank, aged 7. He lived at 27 Fortescue Rd, Bournemouth from 1911 to 1920 as Frederick James Lee.

  5. Albert George John Lee born 1870, Bath, Somerset, baptized: 21 May 1872, St Peter's, Bournemouth, Hampshire. Albert's birth was registerd as Albert George J Lee, 2Q 1870 in Bath, Somerset - 5C 689. In the 1891 census, Albert was a carpenter, lodging at 2 Fox Yard, Holdenhurst, Bournemouth. There was a "Kate Cox", a "Charwoman", born 1872 in Kingston, Dorset, also a lodger. He married 4 June 1891 in Register Office, Christchurch, as Albert John G.W. Lee to Mary Jane Cox, born 1872 in Kingston, Dorset. They were both shown as living at 2 Troy Cottages, Terrace Road, Bournemouth at the time.

Alice Charlotte Ward-Lee (1.James1) born 10 December 1872, Bournemouth, Hampshire, married 2 July 1902, in Bournemouth, Hampshire, Arthur Huffey, born 2 November 1875, Lewes, Sussex, (son of Causan Huffey and Harriet Williams) died 5 December 1964, Ashford, Kent. Alice's birth was not registered until January 1873. She was registered as Alice Charlotte Ward-Lee. This was this first use of 'Ward-Lee' as the family surname. Alice died 1 April 1957, Ashford, Kent. She married as Alice Charlotte Lee. She was living at 77 Walpole Road, Boscombe when she married Arthur. Her father was dead at time of her marriage. Maud Lee & Eliza Lee were witnesses. She was born at Mannington Place, Holdenhurst, Bournemouth, Hampshire.

    Arthur was living at 75 Walpole Road, Boscombe at time of marriage (next door to Alice), and was a Printer Machine Minder. Eliza Lee & Maud Lee were marriage witnesses. He was also an artist, drew sketches in pencil and painted in water colors. Served a 4 year apprenticeship as a Letter Machine Minder with Richard Pelton, of Tunbridge from March 2, 1893 to March 1, 1896. He was paid 6 shillings a week for the 1st. year, then 7 shillings, 9 shillings and finally 10 shillings a week for the last year. He lived at the following addresses:- 288 Malmesbury Park Road, Bournemouth from 1903 - 1907. 21, Fortescue Road, Bournemouth from 1911 - 1914. 57 Fortescue Road, Bournemouth from 1918 - 1932. Ashurst, Poole Lane, Kinson from 1935 - 1947. Ashford, Kent with John & Grace until his death in 1964.

Walter Herbert Ward-Lee (1.James1) born 10 December 1877, 118 Commercial Road, Holdenhurst, Bournemouth, married Emily Mabel Olden, born March 1879 in Bournemouth, daughter of John Olden and Elizabeth Ford. Walter's name was given as Walter Herbert Ward-Lee when Irene was born in 1902. His occupation was shown as "Stage Manager (Ex-Army)". He was later a French Polisher & Cabinet Maker when Frederick Walter was born in 1898. He lived a 6 Wyncombe Rd, Pokesdown from 1901 to 1911. He lived at 16 Wyncombe Rd, Pokesdown from 1913 to 1915 as Walter Lee.

Maud Blanche Ward-Lee(1.James1) born 24 October 1882, Bournemouth, Hampshire, baptized: 24 November 1882, St Peter's, Bournemouth, Hampshire, married 28 November 1915 at the Congregational Church in Mitcham Road, Tooting, Wandsworth, London, William Harry O'Halloran Webb, born 22 December 1881, died 16 August 1931, (son of William Harry Webb and Laura Isabella Billington). Maud died Bournemouth 12 August 1968 living at 20 Darracott Road, Boscombe, Bournemouth. William was a soldier and a musician at Keller Hall in Twickenham.

Leonard Causan James Huffey (3.Alice2, 1.James1) born 14 September 1903, Bournemouth, Hampshire, married (1) 21 April 1930, in Rugby, Warwickshire, Gertrude Agnes Claffey, born 29 October 1903, Birmingham, Warwickshire, (daughter of John Thomas Claffey and Hannah Elizabeth Dean) died 19 January 1962, Bournemouth, Hampshire, married (2) 30 March 1963, in Bournemouth, Hampshire, Dorothy Treeza Cardwell, born 23 March 1906, Cornwall, died 1981, Bournemouth, Dorset.. Leonard died 20 December 1976, Bournemouth, Hampshire.. Leonard was a printer. He served an apprenticeship for 5 years to W. Mate & Sons in Bournemouth, Hampshire, from January 1, 1919 to December 31, 1923. He was paid 10 shillings a week for this 1st. year, then 15 shillings, 18 shillings, 22 shillings and end up with 26 shillings a week for his 5th. year. With the depression in the 1920s. he could not find work in the Bournemouth area and moved to London for a while. He then moved to Rugby, Warwickshire, where he found a permanent position with Frost & Sons. In Rugby, he met and married Gertrude Claffey. During World War II he served with the National Fire Service in Rugby. The family moved to Bournemouth in 1944 because of the poor health of their son, David. Leonard became a convert to Roman Catholicism and was M.C. of the altar staff for many years at the Sacred Heart Church in Bournemouth. He contracted sugar diabetes in 1950 which contributed to arteriosclerosis which badly affected his legs. The bad circulation resulted in gangrene in his feet. He went into hospital and had his right leg amputated but never recovered after the operation. Buried in Bournemouth Wimborne Road Cemetery, Grave No. G5 113 S.

    Lived at 126 Dunchurch Road in Rugby until the family moved to Bournemouth in 1945. Then they lived at 13 The Grove, Moordown, Bournemouth until 1962.

  15. John Arthur Huffey (3.Alice2, 1.James1) born 1 November 1906, Bournemouth, Hampshire, married 1938, in Poole, Dorset, Grace Deayton, born about 1910, (daughter of Joseph Deayton). Owned a hardware store in Kent. Originally a member of the Plymouth Brethren sect, John and Grace became members of the Exclusive Brethren sect.

  17. Percy Frank Ward-Lee (4.Walter2, 1.James1) born 22nd June 1905, 6 Wyncombe Road, Bournemouth, died 1971, Bournemouth. He married Ivy S Morris, born about 1905. Percy lived at 24 Cove Rd, Ensbury Park, Bournemouth in 1937 & 1938. From 1940 to 1944 he lived at 2a Parley Rd, Moordown, Bournemouth. He lived at 6 Nursery Rd, Moordown from 1952 to 1965 and at 8 Nursery Rd, Moordown from 1967 to 1971.

John died 18 October 1979, Bournemouth, Hampshire. John lived at Coolah, 72 Kingswell Rd, Ensbury Park in 1936 (as John Wardlee) and 1937. He lived at 34 Glenville Rd, Ensbury Park from 1940 to 1959 and when he died in 1979, his address was 152 Lonnen Rd, Colehill, Wimborne.
