Leonard was a printer. He served an apprenticeship for 5 years to W. Mate & Sons in Bournemouth, Hampshire, from January 1, 1919 to December 31, 1923. He was paid 10 shillings a week for this 1st. year, then 15 shillings, 18 shillings, 22 shillings and end up with 26 shillings a week for his 5th. year. With the depression in the 1920s. he could not find work in the Bournemouth area and moved to London for a while. He then moved to Rugby, Warwickshire, where he found a permanent position with Frost & Sons. In Rugby, he met and married Gertrude Claffey. During World War II he served with the National Fire Service in Rugby. The family moved to Bournemouth in 1944 because of the poor health of their son, David. Leonard became a convert to Roman Catholicism and was M.C. of the altar staff for many years at the Sacred Heart Church in Bournemouth. He contracted sugar diabetes in 1950 which contributed to arteriosclerosis which badly affected his legs. The bad circulation resulted in gangrene in his feet. He went into hospital and had his right leg amputated but never recovered after the operation. Buried in Bournemouth Wimborne Road Cemetery, Grave No. G5 113 S.
