Descendants of Edward Hoffey

  1. Edward Hoffey, born about 1665, buried 13 April 1705 in Combs, Suffolk, England. I think that Edward was a Hovey from Norfolk.
Edward married Mary Gabb, 25 April 1693 in Combs, Suffolk, (daughter of Giles Gab and Ann _____) baptized 24 September 1662 in Combs, Suffolk, buried 26 August 1729 in Earl Stonham, Suffolk. Was this the Mary Hoffey who married John Write (he was a widower) or was there a daughter named Mary, after her mother?
There is no trace of a baptism for Mary Hoffey, and assuming that Edward the elder, died in 1705, then it is a good assumption that Mary Hoffey, widow, married John Write in 1717 in Earl Stonham. Maybe that is how Edward, her son, met Martha Driver, nee Jennings.
In that case, who was the Mary who married John Write? Also, how did Edward pass himself off as Martha's (Driver / Jennings) father when she married John Bishop? The marriage licence for Edward & Martha show Martha as a widow & Edward as a singleman. Of course, he could have been lying. Answer:- It was probably Edward the father who died in 1705. If it was the son that died in 1705, then the Edward who died in Coddenham in 1739 would have been in his seventies, not impossible, but improbable.

    Second Generation

  3. Edward Hoffey, baptized 26 December 1693 in Combs, Suffolk, buried 13 May 1739 in Coddenham, Suffolk. The overseers of Earl Stonham made Edward marry Martha Driver (widow) as he made her pregnant. They were removed from there to Coddenham by order issued February 19, 1719/20. He later pretended to be her father so she could marry John Bishop.

  4. Edward married Martha Driver (nee Jennings), 19 February 1719/20 in Earl Stonham, Suffolk, born about 1685, buried 6 November 1748 in Coddenham, Suffolk. Martha was a widow who had already had children by her first marriage & one bastard child before she married Edward.

She had a bigamous marriage to John Bishop on 11 January 1721/22. Martha and John bishop were arrested, tried and found guilty at Bury St. Edmunds Assizes, July 67, 1722. Martha had her "Hand burnt" - see Branding in the Middle Ages.

Two newspaper articles follow from the - Suffolk Mercury, July, 1772:-

    Newspaper Article # 1

"Martha Hoffee, alias Bishop, was indicted for marrying two Husbands, both now living. The Overseers of Earl-Stonham depos'd, That about two years ago, the Prisoner was with Child by Edward Hoffee, upon which they oblig'd the said Hoffee to marry her, after which they carried them with an Order to Coddenham; that in January last she was again marry'd to John Bishop, and that her first Husband, Edward Hoffee, acted the Part of a Father, and gave her away. The Prisoner deny'd the Fact, and Bishop being call'd would not swear against her; but her Confession before a Justice, sign'd by her self, with Hoffee's and Bishop's Hand to it, being produced, she said there was a Bond made between her and Hoffee by a Lawyer, who told her that she was at her own Liberty, Upon which the Jury brought her in guilty."

Question 1 - Why did the lawyer tell Martha that "she was at her own liberty", or is that a lie?

Question 2 - How did Edward manage to pass himself as Martha's father? She was older than him.

    Newspaper Article #2.

"Last night the Assizes ended here, when ....... John Gold was burnt in the Hand for Sheep-stealing, and Martha Hoffee, alias Bishop, for having two Husbands alive."

Martha was buried in Coddenham as Martha Hoffy in 1748.

The house is first mentioned in Robert Gillingham's will dated December 15, 1787, which he leaves to his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Hinnel. She sold the house to George Steel for £80 on October 4, 1804 who bequeathed the house to his son George. Samuel had rented the cottage for a number of years until he bought it for £12 on June 12, 1845.

"All that piece or parcel of land (upon which a messuage tenement or cottage and outbuildings stood and were occupied therewith until the month of June last when they were destroyed by fire)..". Samuel borrowed £40 from Isaac Hynard on April 17, 1846 and a further £30 on April 28, 1847. His son-in-law, William Brown, paid off the mortgage on June 9, 1873 and the property was conveyed to him. Children:

  28. Mary Ann (Harriet) Huffee, baptized 6 March 1814 in Bacton, Suffolk, buried 21 April 1887 in Woolpit, Suffolk. Speculation as whether Harriet & Mary Ann are the same person. Harriet's age was given as 79 years when she died. This would make her birth in 1808. No trace of Harriet's birth or baptism, only of MaryAnne. She apparently had three illegitimate children before she married Francis Palmer.

The 1841 census shows him as a lodger with James Everitt, shoemaker of Tostock, as Charles Huffee..

There are several cabin and second cabin passengers on board and we are glad to observe from the passenger list that almost all the Government immigrants are from the country districts of the United Kingdom. All have arrived in good health, and the ship generally is in a condition reflecting great credit upon the Captain, Surgeon and Officers. The Cresswell landed all her passengers yesterday morning and, as there is no cargo to discharge, when the emigrants luggage is out she will proceed at once to Nelson."

He would collect all kinds of things in nature for his extensive microscopic slide collection. He was also an artist, and drew highly detailed sketches in pencil which would eventually become water color paintings. At one time, there was an exhibition of his paintings at the Russell Coates Art Gallery in Bournemouth. He used to send small paintings at Christmas to the family instead of Christmas Cards. He liked working with wood, presumably inherited from his father, Causan. He made a lathe, powered by a foot treadle from an old Singer sewing machine, on which he made beautiful bowls, candles sticks, egg cups, etc. In the late 1940s he designed and made a toy/gadget/machine which produced multicolored patterns. His design was years ahead of the "Spirograph", which made someone (not Arthur) a lot of money. Sometimes, during the winter, he would return from one of his trips to the country with small pieces of wood from different trees. He would put one end into the fire to get it to smolder, then he would hold the stick under the table, which had an overhanging table cloth. After a few moments he would then pull up the cloth and a wonderful aromatic smell would fill the room. Arthur had a delightful sense of humor. He once related how, Alice, who was not initially a very good cook used to make his lunch to take to work. The lunch was not very good, so he threw it over the railway bridge, on to the tracks, as he cycled to work. He served a 4 year apprenticeship as a Letter Machine Minder with Richard Pelton, of Tunbridge from March 2, 1893 to March 1, 1897. He was paid 6 shillings a week for the 1st. year, then 7 shillings, 9 shillings and finally 10 shillings a week for the last year.
